Honor Roll - 1st Marking Period


FCCLA Students Earn Gold at National Competition
FCCLS WinnersTwo students from Columbia-Montour AVTS traveled to the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference held in Anaheim, California from July 10 – July 14.

After earning first place for their project at the State Level in March, Brandi Davis, Berwick, and Emily Creveling, Bloomsburg, headed for the National Leadership Conference and returned with National Gold Medals. The pair, both students in the Food Preparation Program at CMAVTS under the direction of Mrs. Sally Matje, competed in the category "Illustrated Talk", which requires participants to give a ten minute presentation including illustrations and visual aids on a subject related to their vocational area. Davis, a 2011 graduate of CMAVTS, and Creveling, Class of 2012, presented on the topic "ServSafe", a program about safe food preparations and serving methods.

FCCLA is a national, student organization dedicated to leadership development and the promotion of Family and Consumer Sciences Education.


HOSA National Leadership Conference - Summer 2011

Kelsey Phillips and Erin Snyder won a bronze medal at the state level and finished in the top 10 in the event; Career Health Display on Phlebotomy. This was the second trip to nationals for these two graduating seniors and they competed against 63 other teams. Darlene Poust, Ana Perez and Samantha Hare won silver medals at the state level and competed against 60 other teams at Nationals in the Health Education event: Sports Injuries. They are looking forward to competing again their senior year.

Students at the national conference came from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia to compete and learn more about HOSA's role in promoting healthy communities and opportunities for students to advance in their chosen healthcare careers. The students would like to thank the JOC of Columbia-Montour AVTS, their teachers, and the members of the community for their financial support and well-wishes that helped them get to Anaheim to represent both Pennsylvania and Columbia-Montour AVTS.

William L. Forsythe, Jr., left, director of Columbia-Montour Area Vocational-Technical School, holds the award for Increasing Academic Achievement won at the Pennsylvania Association of Career & Technical Administrators (PACTA) Symposium in Hershey. The school also received an award for Occupational Skills Acheivement for outstanding NOCTI results. With Mr. Forsythe are Dennis Hain, director of Sun Area Technical Institute, and Robert Beierschmitt, principal at Northumberland County Career & Technology Center.
