Columbia-Montour AVTS
    English 12 with Ms. Postupack

    Course Description

    English 12 is designed to offer a smooth transition between high school and post secondary education and/or the workforce. We focus on several types of literature with an emphasis on British literature, expository writing, and research writing. The course also includes reading novels, studying drama and poetry, and also a unit on practical writing. Vocabulary development is studied both semesters.

    Course Objectives

    Students in English 12 will study literature, enhance vocabulary, review grammar and usage, improve writing skills, and engage in presentations. Students will meet all of the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Academic Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.

    Teaching Philosophy

    Students will engage in assignments meant to challenge their reading, writing, listening, and processing skills. High quality work is expected and deadlines are to be met. Classroom activities include reading, writing, research and projects. Students will participate in teacher-led class discussions, student-led small group discussions, and independent work. Each marking period students will participate in presentations designed to enhance their public speaking skills. Assessments include short quizzes, essays, tests, creative/research projects, and presentations.

    Behavioral Expectations

    While it is not explicitly stated all students should conduct themselves in a polite and respectful manner. Students are also expected to follow all rules stated in the student handbook. I expect mature attitudes and cooperation from my students. If there are multiple behavioral infractions, parents will be contacted and the student will be written up.

    Grading

    All tests, essays, quizzes, and assignments are based on a point system with each being weighted differently.

    TESTS =35% QUIZZES =15% PROJECTS =40% HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK =10%

    Five (5) points will be deducted each day an assignment is late. Students who are illegally absent will be given a zero (0) for the work that was due on the day they were illegally absent. This includes any in class work that was done that day AND any out of class work that was due that day. ALSO, legal absences mean that work missed is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. ALL MISSED WORK MUST BE MADE UP BY YOU; THE TEACHER WILL NOT FOLLOW YOU AROUND ASKING YOU TO MAKE UP WORK.
